International Nurses Day

International Nurses Day is celebrated around the world every May 12th.

Every year there’s a different theme set by the International Council of Nurses (ICN). This year’s theme for 2015 is Nurses A Force For Change: Care Effective, Cost Effective. A kit of promotional and educational material is distributed every year that supports the theme.

There are different fields and levels of nursing, though all target to do the same thing, to help the individual in need to recover in good health. Nurses constantly try to maintain a sense of community. Nurses communicate with everybody. From doctors, to social workers, to patients and the patients families.

Nurses are a huge part of the healthcare industry and are responsible for many different tasks. From welfare, recovery, and safety of patients, nurses work tirelessly everyday including holidays and weekends. They work long hours taking care of the ill and injured. So, let's take this week and thank the nurses for doing all the difficult tasks that they do.

ENDOMETRIOSIS

Picture this: intense chronic pain in your gut causing you to just sink onto the floor against the wall and cradle up in fetal position in the middle of the day on the way to work. It’s literally killing you from the inside out. You don’t want to move. You can’t move.

Dealing with any kind of pain, even the smallest kind, like a paper cut is not pleasant. Endometriosis is a common disease that many women suffer from.
The most common symptom is pain. Mainly this pain can happen cramping from periods or during/after sexual activity. Many women think that once menopause hits that endometriosis will just disappear.

Endometriosis happens when the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus. Endometriosis can also make it harder to get pregnant.

It’s understandable why many women don’t want to talk about endometriosis. It’s not like breast cancer awareness where it can affect both men and women. Endometriosis is seen as a disgusting topic to talk about. It’s all about painful menstrual cramps, painful bowel movements, bleeding or spotting in between periods, and any other immune issues like bloating, nausea, and so forth. Let’s face it; these aren’t really table topic discussions. Also, many parents and doctors tell many girls that these pains are normal to experience. Finally, endometriosis was not something that was considered to affect young teenage girls.

Culturally, some women don’t go to a gynecologist when they experience any kind of pain because of religious circumstances or because they’re ashamed. Raising awareness for endometriosis is imperative because it affects 1 in 10 women around us. It can happen from a very young age and continue onwards even after menopause.

One of the ways to raise awareness about endometriosis is by teaching a girl when she first learns about her period she should also be told about endometriosis and how common it is. When a girl is in pain during her period she is told, “deal with it” its part of menstruating and being a woman. When in fact that’s not the case.

By exercising regularly, avoiding large amounts of alcohol, and large amounts of caffeinated drinks will decrease their estrogen levels circulating their bodies.

Diet Soda could break your heart seriously!

(January 30, 2015)An unlikely cause of heart problems in senior citizen women is from a culprit  many of us have in our refrigerators. Diet soda. According to a national study, ,cited in an article on the AARP website this past April, post menopausal women that drink diet soda on a regular basis have a greater likelihood of having heart attacks and strokes.

The study showed that women who drank two or more diet sodas a day were 30 percent more likely to have cardiovascular problems and had a 50 percent stronger chance of dying from a heart related disease than those who did not drink as much diet soda.

But that's not all! This study seems to be supported by previous research where artificial sweeteners in drinks were found to be associated with teenage and adult weight gain and an increase in Metabolic Syndrome which increases ones chances of having heart disease.

While this study was quoted to have only proved an association between drinking diet soda and heart related diseases and did not prove that drinking diet soda causes heart disease it still may be a better idea to drink water when your thirsty and stay away from the diet soda!
