Picture this: intense chronic pain in your gut causing you to just sink onto the floor against the wall and cradle up in fetal position in the middle of the day on the way to work. It’s literally killing you from the inside out. You don’t want to move. You can’t move.
Dealing with any kind of pain, even the smallest kind, like a paper cut is not pleasant. Endometriosis is a common disease that many women suffer from.
The most common symptom is pain. Mainly this pain can happen cramping from periods or during/after sexual activity. Many women think that once menopause hits that endometriosis will just disappear.
Endometriosis happens when the lining of the uterus grows outside of the uterus. Endometriosis can also make it harder to get pregnant.
It’s understandable why many women don’t want to talk about endometriosis. It’s not like breast cancer awareness where it can affect both men and women. Endometriosis is seen as a disgusting topic to talk about. It’s all about painful menstrual cramps, painful bowel movements, bleeding or spotting in between periods, and any other immune issues like bloating, nausea, and so forth. Let’s face it; these aren’t really table topic discussions. Also, many parents and doctors tell many girls that these pains are normal to experience. Finally, endometriosis was not something that was considered to affect young teenage girls.
Culturally, some women don’t go to a gynecologist when they experience any kind of pain because of religious circumstances or because they’re ashamed. Raising awareness for endometriosis is imperative because it affects 1 in 10 women around us. It can happen from a very young age and continue onwards even after menopause.
One of the ways to raise awareness about endometriosis is by teaching a girl when she first learns about her period she should also be told about endometriosis and how common it is. When a girl is in pain during her period she is told, “deal with it” its part of menstruating and being a woman. When in fact that’s not the case.
By exercising regularly, avoiding large amounts of alcohol, and large amounts of caffeinated drinks will decrease their estrogen levels circulating their bodies.
